Accessibility is never “done.” Our goal is a website that serves people of all backgrounds, situations, and abilities. This page explains what we’ve done so far, where we know we can do better, and how to get help.

Serving people of all abilities

GovTok exists to help people participate in rulemaking. That includes users with disabilities using screen readers, keyboards, zoom, voice control, and assistive tech. If something here blocks you, tell us and we’ll fix it.

User experience on our site

People using our website should be able to:

• Zoom up to 200% without content spilling off screen
• Navigate the site using only a keyboard
• Use a screen reader to read content and follow links

What we’ve done

• Plain-language content to keep reading level reasonable
• Semantic HTML & headings with USWDS landmarks
• Manual keyboard testing for focus order and visible focus
• Screen reader checks: VoiceOver (macOS/iOS), NVDA, JAWS
• Automated checks: axe, Lighthouse
• Color tokens from USWDS to maintain AA contrast
• New-tab cues for external links via screen-reader text

Known limitations

• Some third-party embeds (e.g., video/social) may lack perfect captions or keyboard support
• Reader Mode can be inconsistent on a few pages
• Historic PDFs from agencies may not be fully tagged; we’ll provide an HTML alternative on request
• No user-level personalization of fonts/line height yet
• No site-wide light/dark mode toggle yet

Roadmap

• Quarterly a11y audits and regression testing
• Testing with speech recognition software
• Invite users with disabilities to evaluate key flows
• Expand captions/transcripts for older videos and embeds
